Quota - To Be or Not To Be

Once upon a time, there was a wise man called Mr. Arjun Singh. A man who had the solution to the mail problem India had over the past 60 years. The problem of poverty, the problem of illiteracy, the problem of hunger.

As the whole country was struggling to get answers, Arjun Singh ji ne bola 'Ureka'. Got the solution. Its so simple...We just need reservation. Reservation at institutes of higher learning. 27% more reservation for the OBCs. So akmost 50% of the seats will be reserved for SC/ST/OBCs.

Well done Mr Singh..!! But sir, what percentage of people in India are OBCs? Is it 32% or is it 28% as various reports have mentioned? Why do you mention it is 52%? Or even better, your colleagues mention it is 60-70%. How are you implementing such an important decision without even knowing the figures accurately?

Just a reminder, almost 50% of the population in India are women. Any plans for them? As far as my memory goes, you & your colleagues had tried it before for the Parliament. But where is that Bill now? Why has everyone forgotten about it? Hmm, understood...There is no vote bank politics in that.

Now coming back to Reservation for OBCs. I am made to believe that it is done for the social upliftment of sections of the people. But Sir, the actual people who need to the uplifted live in the villages..They live in the forests. They don't have 2 square meals a day..Probably most of them earn less than a dollar a day. What will they do with the Reservation at IITs and IIMs. If you are serious about their upliftment, then give them basic education. Make reservations at those places. Give them vocational training. Give them some work. Give them food. Give them incentives to attend school. Then only will there be a social transformation. Then only there will be an upliftment. Don't try to teach someone Calculus when they don't know basic Addition.

Another aspect which the country is looking forward to you, Sir, is to provide answers on how infrastructure will be managed. And would it be advisible to spend so much on infratsructure at places of higher education, without spending on primary education?

Finally, shouldn't there be reservation in the ministry too? What is your take on that Mr. Singh? Unless people from all castes, class etc etc are equally (or proportionately) represented in the ministry, how will policies come up for the betterment of all classes of the society???
